CHAVURAH FAQ

What is a Chavurah?

The word “Chavurah” (plural – Chavurot) comes from the Hebrew word “Chaver” which means friend.  The formation of a Chavurah is an opportunity to develop life-long friendships with congregants who have similar interests. A Chavurah is a group of people to gather to form a community, celebrate holidays and learn more about Jewish subjects of interest.  Participation in a Chavurah can be a way to make the most of the spiritual, social and intellectual activities and opportunities provided by our congregation.  Groups meet in members’ homes or at other chosen places such as the movies, museums or parks.  Chavurah members form lasting bonds by creating extended families.

Why Join a Chavurah?

In our mobile society, we often live far from extended family and longtime friends. Busy lives keep us from connecting with people in our neighborhoods and community. Yet we yearn for the warmth and support of a close-knit community. A Chavurah can provide this kind of caring and community.  Members celebrate each other’s joys — and comfort each other during difficult times.

What Kinds of Things Does a Chavurah Do?

Many different things.  Your group can celebrate holidays such as enjoying a Shabbat dinner together, building a Sukkah or having a Chanukah party. Your group may want to perform mitzvot by participating in community service projects. A Chavurah can have fun socializing by having a pot luck dinner or hiking though the woods.  A Chavurah can attend Beth Emek social events, such as Port and Chocolate in the Sukkah, together.

Where Do Chavurot Meet?

Anywhere!  Chavurot primarily meet in members’ homes, or can meet at theaters, museums, restaurants, parks, Beth Emek or at other locations.

When Do Chavurot Meet?

Usually once a month.  Groups may select a regularly scheduled date each month or may calendar based on Beth Emek or community activities.

What Might be the Focus of a Chavurah?

The limit is set only by the members’ imaginations!  Chavurot may meet for social or cultural purposes, community service or service to the Congregation.  Chavurot comprised of families often choose child-centered activities as their primary focus.

How Large is a Chavurah and Who is Involved?
The size of a group is determined by each individual Chavurah.  The Chavurah Committee recommends that each Chavurah consist of at least 6 families.  Groups are formed by the Chavurah Chairperson initially, based upon responses to the attached application. An attempt will be made to form groups with similar interests. The Chavurah Chairperson also helps to organize each new Chavurah and is available for ongoing advice
Who Runs the Chavurah?
Each Chavurah is self-governed and sets its own rules and agenda. Congregation Beth Emek’s Chavurah Committee is available as a resource, but does not direct activities. The members of the Chavurah chart the direction of their group. Each group should have a contact person so that the Committee can communicate as needed.
