Kashrut Policy and Practice at Congregation Beth Emek

Congregation Beth Emek’s kashrut policy applies to the synagogue building and grounds.

Regarding community events held in the synagogue and under Beth Emek sponsorship at other locations:

  • Meat and milk will not be served together and a minimum of one hour must pass between meat and dairy courses.
  • Synagogue potluck dinners will be dairy only.
  • Congregational activities, or events supervised by the congregation, may offer meat that is kosher-style such as chicken, beef, lamb, or turkey.
  • Imitation treif (soy bacon, etc.) is not permitted.
  • Menus must be approved in advance by the Rabbi or his appointee.

Regarding “brown bag” lunches and dinners at the synagogue:

  • Individuals attending synagogue events who bring their meals with them may bring meat or dairy.

Regarding Congregation Beth Emek’s Preschool:

  • The preschool is dairy only. No snacks from home are permitted in the building.

Regarding Passover:

  • Chametz will not be permitted.

Note from Rabbi Winer: A significant portion of our community is highly sensitive to animal cruelty and therefore avoid eating or being in the presence of these items. Therefore: Veal and pâté de foie gras are not permitted.

Questions regarding Congregation Beth Emek's policy may be addressed to Rabbi Winer or his appointee.

Approved by the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Emek, August 2006.
